What is Excel to Markdown Table Converter?

Markdown tables are the standard way to show tabular data on GitHub, GitLab, Notion-style wikis and static site generators, but typing pipes and dashes by hand is slow. This tool reads .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .ods and .csv files locally and writes the chosen sheet as a GFM table.

The header line and the alignment row are generated for you. Numeric columns can be right-aligned automatically, columns can be padded so the source is readable in a monospace editor, pipes inside cells are escaped as \| and line breaks become <br>. Accents, Arabic text and emoji are kept as they are.

How does it work?

  1. Drop an Excel, ODS or CSV file on the drop zone; it is read locally and never uploaded.
  2. Pick the sheet from the selector if the workbook has more than one.
  3. Choose whether the first row is the header, how columns are aligned (auto, left, center, right), and whether to pad and trim cells.
  4. Copy the Markdown or download the .md file and paste it into your README or issue.

Limitations

Markdown tables have no merged cells, colours or formulas: only values are written, as displayed in the workbook. Sheets are cut at 20,000 rows, and very wide tables are hard to read in any editor.

Frequently asked questions

What does the auto alignment do?

A column whose non-empty cells all look like numbers (12, -3.5, 1,200, 45%) gets a right-aligned delimiter (---:); every other column stays left-aligned (:---). You can also force one alignment for every column.

What if a cell contains a pipe or several lines?

With the escape option on, a pipe becomes \| and a line break becomes <br>, so the row never splits into extra columns. Turn it off only if you want the raw text.

Are wide characters and emoji padded correctly?

Padding is computed from the display width: CJK characters and most emoji count as two columns and combining accents or Arabic marks as zero, so the pipes line up in a monospace font.

Does the spreadsheet leave my computer?

No. The file is opened by a script running in your browser tab, so a private budget or customer list is never sent to a server.
