What is Transpose Excel?

Data often arrives turned the wrong way: months down the side when your chart wants them across the top, or one record per column when every tool expects one per row. Transposing rotates a table around its diagonal so the cell in row 2, column 5 moves to row 5, column 2.

This tool reads the sheet you pick, pads short rows with empty cells so the table stays rectangular, and shows the first rows before and after together with the dimensions. Values and number formats such as dates and currencies move with their cells. The result is a new .xlsx with the transposed sheet, and you can choose to keep the other sheets of the workbook too.

How does it work?

  1. Drop the workbook (up to 50 MB); pick the sheet with the selector if there are several.
  2. Look at the "Before" text and the transposed table preview to confirm the layout.
  3. Tick "Keep the other sheets" if you want the whole workbook back with only this sheet flipped.
  4. Download the transposed .xlsx.

  • Turning a horizontal list of months into a vertical column ready for a pivot table or chart.
  • Flipping a survey export that has one column per respondent into one row per respondent.
  • Rotating a small lookup table so headers become the first column.

Transpose Excel runs entirely in your browser. The text or files you provide are processed on your device and are not uploaded, logged or stored on our servers.

Limitations

Only values and number formats move: formulas keep their last calculated value (they are not rewritten to follow the new layout) and styles, merged cells, charts and macros are dropped. The result must fit an Excel sheet, so a sheet with more than 16,384 rows cannot be transposed.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to formulas when I transpose?

They are not executed or rewritten. Each cell keeps the value it last calculated and simply moves to its new position, so nothing points at the wrong cells afterwards.

Why can a very long sheet not be transposed?

Rows become columns, and an Excel sheet has at most 16,384 columns. A sheet with more rows than that would not fit, so the tool tells you instead of producing a broken file.

Are merged cells, colours and column widths kept?

No. Only values and number formats are carried over, and column widths are recalculated for the new layout.
