What is Merge Excel Files?

Combining monthly reports, exports from several branches or a folder of CSV extracts usually means copy-pasting sheet after sheet. This tool reads all the files you choose (.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .ods and .csv) and writes one clean .xlsx workbook, without opening Excel.

Four modes cover the common cases: append the rows of sheets that share the same name, append the rows of sheets in the same position, append compatible rows from everything into a single sheet, or keep every sheet in one workbook without merging rows. With a header row, columns are matched by name so files with reordered or extra columns still line up, and only one header is kept. Duplicate sheet names are numbered, names are cleaned to Excel’s 31-character rules, and numbers, dates and text keep their types.

How does it work?

  1. Drop or select two or more files; the order you pick is the order of the rows.
  2. Choose how to merge: same sheet name, same sheet position, all rows into one sheet, or every sheet kept in one workbook.
  3. Tick whether the first row is a header (columns are then aligned by name), and optionally add a source_file column or include hidden sheets.
  4. Click merge, check the preview and summary, then download merged.xlsx.

Limitations

Only values and number formats are copied: formulas are never executed (they keep their last calculated value), and styles, charts, images, merged cells and macros are dropped. Files are limited to 50 MB each, and the result to Excel’s 1,048,576 rows.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the files do not have the same columns?

With "first row is a header" on, columns are matched by header name. A column that exists only in some files is added at the end and left blank for the others, and the tool tells you how many such columns there were. With it off, rows are appended by position.

How are two sheets with the same name handled?

In the row-appending modes they are stacked together on purpose. In the "keep every sheet" mode each one stays a separate sheet and duplicates are numbered, for example Data and Data (2), so nothing is overwritten and every name respects Excel’s limits.

Which mode should I use for workbooks with several sheets?

Use "same sheet name" when every file has Jan, Feb… sheets that should be stacked by name, "same position" when the sheets are named differently but ordered the same way, and "keep every sheet in one workbook" when you just want everything together without combining rows.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The workbooks are read and written in your browser with a local spreadsheet library, formulas and macros are never executed, and nothing leaves your device.
