What is Split Excel File?

One workbook often carries a sheet per region, per month or per client, and each recipient should only receive their own. This tool opens .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .ods and .csv files locally, lists the sheets as toggle buttons and writes every selected sheet into its own standalone .xlsx workbook.

File names are built from the workbook and sheet names, cleaned of characters that operating systems refuse (\ / : * ? " < > |), kept to 80 characters and numbered when two names would collide. Tick the ZIP option to get everything in one split.zip built in your browser. Values and number formats are kept; formulas are never executed and macros, charts and images are not copied.

How does it work?

  1. Drop the workbook (up to 50 MB) on the drop zone; all sheets are selected by default.
  2. Toggle off the sheets you do not need to split out.
  3. Tick "Download everything as one ZIP file" if there are many sheets.
  4. Check the file list, then download the .xlsx files or split.zip.

Split Excel File runs entirely in your browser. The text or files you provide are processed on your device and are not uploaded, logged or stored on our servers.

Limitations

Only values and number formats are copied: formulas become their last calculated value, and styles, charts, images, defined names and macros are dropped. Very large workbooks can take a while, since everything is processed on your device.

Frequently asked questions

How are the output files named?

The workbook name and the sheet name joined with a hyphen, for example report-North.xlsx. Characters that Windows, macOS or Linux do not allow are replaced by underscores, names stop at 80 characters and duplicates get -2, -3…

Do I need the ZIP option?

No. Without it every sheet is a separate download. The ZIP is only a convenience when a workbook has many sheets: it contains the very same .xlsx files.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The workbook is read, split and zipped by code running in your browser, so confidential sheets never leave your device.
